BOB WEINER'S RECENT OR UPCOMING RADIO-TV APPEARANCES

Since leaving the White House, Bob has been interviewed more than 500 times on TV and radio, including guest appearances on “Crossfire”, Bill Maher, and “Penn and Teller.” He has been a regularly-featured commentator on

  • Radio America Network (more than 450 markets plus live streaming audio) on "Battle Line” with host Alan Nathan; for archived copies for a week following a show, click on Missed our last show? The show is “one of the top twenty talk shows in the nation,” according to Replay Media Guide, and Alan has been cited three times as one of the top 100 hosts by Talkers Magazine. The show airs on AM or FM stations in many markets.
  • The Lars Larson Show on 180 stations on Westwood One (when Bob is on, you can Listen Live or on your local station; and
  • XM Radio Network’s “Urban Journal” with host Keith Murphy (when Bob is on, go to XM Channel 167 or click on his segment.)

  • Bob’s recent appearances are listed below. All times are Eastern Time.

    2009

  • 06/30/2009 -- 1:06 PM -- Live on “Native America” on 45 stations mostly in West but also live streamed nationally on www.nativeamericacalling.com to discuss drug legalization. I agree with administrations of both parties and Congress who regularly oppose it, because would take the normative power of the law away from parents as a tool and would dramatically increase youth and adult drug abuse and all its problems. We just published an oped letter on this issue: June 18, 2009 -- “Drugs Have Not 'Won The War,' Legalization Would Be Catastrophe” -- in The New York Times
  • 06/23/2009 -- 2:00 PM -- WASN Ohio-PA 1500: Reported live from the White House Press Room on one of our favorite progressive radio shows, Louie Free’s “Brain Food from the Heartland”, Ohio-Pennsylvania’s WASN 1500, with our regular ½ hour segment, “Inside Washington Report”. Couldn’t have been much more “inside” than today, at the WH right after the news conf. I conveyed my impressions: I Said that President is brilliant guy, amazing depth on issues, what a change, and policies direction is fantastic for the country and world. Thought he hit just the right message on Iran… candid about McCain’s pushing him more forceful but equally solid on not being foil for Iran and reform impetus must be Iranian people… He is completely right on need for stimulus… He is right that NHI public option is needed to stop over-profiteering (greed) of the insurance companies from driving health care costs; I stated that hope he can hold his ground on this, R’s are lobbying hard against. Not sure Pres meant “Fed has done a good job” when even Greenspan said he made huge mistake to ignore need to regulate more… whole philosophy of deregulation and inaction was one factor driving current economic hole; new CFPA bill huge step forward.
This was the fourth Presidential news conference at the White House, and we’ve been able to participate there in all… a high privilege as all the media there agree despite the perceived cynicism. | Photo 1 | Photo 2

Until we get a handle on drug treatment we are not going to solve crime in America." | VIDEO

  • 05/02/2009 -- 6:00 PM -- Regular Radio America (60 stations) on-air analyst interview re Obama 100 Days and White House news conference, on “Battle Line”, host Alan Nathan, to air 6PM Sat. and repeated 3AM Sun. As a participant there at the news conference, I said excitement in media in WH briefing room before the escort to the East room was palpable as media knew were part of history. I said to cite 100 days is legitimate marker the media and Roosevelt created, and Obama’s bold vision and activist big-picture solving of problems inherited was being called by historians on same level as Roosevelt. I laid out what Obama and administration have put forward from recovery for workers rather than just the rich to reversing policies on torture and politicized science to focus on Afghanistan and Pakistan rather than Iraq is exactly what American people voted for. When I was challenged on torture working, I said that the FBI guy who interviewed the lead al Qaeda operative that the past administration touted as a success of torture actually said he got more out of him through traditional techniques before the CIA contractors jumped in with waterboarding 180+ times, and Obama is right that that is not what we are, and torture was a propaganda recruiting tool for al Qaeda. To listen online at 6PM Saturday or 3AM Sunday, go to www.radioamerica.org or www.alannathan.com, show also podcast and then archived the next Monday.
  • 04/29/2009 -- Photo: Presidential News Conference at White House, on Obama's 100th Day
  • 04/29/2009 -- Bob Weiner Interviewed LIVE from White House Briefing Room (just prior to attending Presidential News Conference) on 98.9 WGUF FM, Naples FL Talk by Dave Elliott, re Obama 100 days, Administration agenda, Republican obstructionism, Arlen Specter impact on the Republican party, and describing packed briefing room's palpable excitement waiting for escort to "100 Days" news conference in East Room. (Note: much of Obama agenda as President described it now subject of several opeds in process).
  • 04/21/2009 -- 1:35 PM -- WASN (OH-PA) Bob Weiner and Dr. Patricia Berg guests on Louie Free's "Brain Food from the Heartland," LIVE from American Association for Cancer Research convention in Denver, with 17,000 cancer researchers attending. Discussed April 18 Denver Post oped by Bob Weiner and Dr. Berg. Link to oped: http://www.weinerpublic.com/20090418post.html Dr. Berg is director of a breast and prostate cancer lab at George Washington University. Discussed how she discovered a gene activated in 80% of breast cancers and 70% of prostate cancers. She is now working on a blood test and suppressor. Her work is widely cited by TV and press including NY Times, Washington Post, AP. Over 500,000 people die a year from cancer, each year 200,000 get breast cancer and 200,000 get prostate cancer. Bob discussed the national politics of the Chavez handshake, credit card interest abuses, banks doing better, Exxon-Mobil #1 Fortune 500, danger of caving on health care reform, and the need for cancer research funding.
  • 04/15/2009 - 5:05-5:15 (prime drive time). Interviewed live on WGUF-FM, Host Dave Elliott, Naples FL re the tax tea parties. I pointed out that they are basically saying they are "mad as hell and don't want to take it" but in reality are a fringe group of people who are in the minority opposing and bashing President Obama for any reason they can think of, who lost the election. and that when you get down to the tax issue, it's hard to understand what they are mad about since 95% of Americans get tax breaks under the new plan, and they are countering their own interest in Obama's programs to create fairness and justice in the economy. I said I never do understand how some middle and poor Americans think that under the Republican program of tax breaks for the rich that they themselves will be helped -- quite the reverse is the historical reality, and it's living in an illusion to think rich tax breaks help the middle and lower: the income disparity has widened dramatically. When host Dave Elliott raised the "spending into oblivion" argument raised by some, I pointed out that it was the last Administration that took Clinton's surplus and turned the debt into $10 trillion; and now, when they created an economic mess, it's like saying the house is on fire so you can't use any water because it's scarce. You have to, to fix the emergency.
  • 04/11/2009 -- 6:00 PM Radio America “Battle Line,” regular panelist with host Alan Nathan. Discussed President’s Europe trip. To listen at 6PM this Saturday or repeated 3AM Sunday, 60+ stations or Internet www.radioamerica.org .
  • 04/07/2009 -- 11:00 AM WASN (OH-PA) Interviewed LIVE by host Louie Free, "Brain Food from the Heartland" for my regular segment, "Inside Washington Report." Was on for 20 minutes. Discussed Obama's trip; his Prague nuclear disarmament policy speech; need to investigate Bush administration torture policy (and the 92 destroyed tapes), Iraq WMD-war basis, and warrantless wiretaps even as Obama/Holder move forward with properly changed policies; prognosis and need for National health insurance, and danger of Afghanistan DOD mission creep unless focused on al Qaeda destruction. Also mentioned humorous history episode when working with earthy, candid, brilliant Ed Koch in Congress as Bella Abzug yelled into the phone (and we in Ed's office could overhear her on phone even in next room from Ed) that Ed was "sexist" because he supported Bess Meyerson for NYC Mayor instead of Bella herself. and Ed walked into staff room after the call and wondered how it was sexist to support another woman. This was before Ed later ran and won a couple years later for Mayor.

  • 03/06/2009 -- 10:30 AM WASN (OH-PA) Interviewed by host Louie Free, “Brain Food from the Heartland” for my regular segment, “Inside Washington Report.” Was on with for thirty minutes together with former State Senator & Democratic Party Chair Harry Meshel. Reminisced my Oberlin College Young Democratic organizing days assisting Cong. Don Pease, Governor Gilligan, Mayor Stokes, and since Meshel is 84, discussed the politics of aging/Claude Pepper (I was his chief of staff while we abolished mandatory retirement). Also discussed current priorities for Progressives including avoiding mission creep in Afghanistan, protecting Social Security from benefit cuts, finally achieving national health insurance, the justification of going after Rush Limbaugh when he says he hopes Obama fails, and fighting branding of “socialist” when all progressives are doing is protecting Americans’ rights to succeed.

  • 02/24/2009 -- 10:30 AM Interviewed Live WASN (OH-PA plus national internet), host Louie Free, "Brain Food from the Heartland," for our regular segment "Report from Washington." Discussed Obama congress speech tonight, Recovery/Stimulus Act, public dropping approval of Minority for obstruction versus Obama's outreach, Fair Pay Act as passed, SChip (Children's Health) Act passed, Financial Responsibility summit and unprecedented open break-out groups, dropping Social Security commission (good!) and the myth of Social Security deficit, DC Voting Rights to be voted finally today.
  • 02/19/2009 -- 8:05 AM Interviewed Live on KTRH 740 AM Houston news-talk, hosts JP Pritchard and Lana Hughes, re Alex Rodriguez. Led with Obama statement at last week's WH news conf and described that the room essentially stopped and took special attention when Wash Post Michael Fletcher asked President about Rodriguez and major league baseball, and Obama said "most concerned about message to kids." I said was exactly right, there is no accountability by MLB, their drug policy is a sham, the 103 players who have tested positive and Rodriguez should face consequences as do all Olympic sports where you are banned for significant time if you are found doing drugs, but they have no consequences in MLB. Rodriguez says he apologizes but he looks forward to playing this season. The real message to kids in baseball is 'you can get away with it,' I concluded.
  • 02/07/2009 -- 6:30 PM (repeated Sun. AM 02/08) guest on Radio America, 70 stations and 600 cities, show “Battle Line”, host Alan Nathan, re stimulus, Iraq, and Iran. During conversation I referred to President Obama’s Democratic Caucus speech re the bill’s balance already including tax cuts but targeted, spending serving as a stimulus, and not repeating mistargeted tax cut and lax oversight mistakes of the last eight years that brought us the economic mess. Also agreed with need for additional infrastructure (host’s point) but pointed out Senate Republicans defeated amendment to accomplish that; and I brought up SEC’s failure to discipline Madoff despite warnings. In response to criticism of Pelosi’s verbal typo of 500 million rather than 500,000 jobs lost each month, I countered with Republican congressmen and senators recently ridiculously doing rings around Jupiter (joke, they actually used earth) to show how many dollar bills are involved. Show can also be heard during airtime at www.alannathan.com and www.radioamerica.org and is podcast, and is archived beginning Monday following Saturday-Sunday airings.
  • 02/03/2009 -- 10:30 AM Interviewed live for 25 mins. on WASN (OH-PA plus national internet), host Louie Free, "Brain Food from the Heartland," for my regular segment, "Inside Report from Washington." • 01/18/2009 -- 9:45 AM Interviewed live on Sky News for 10 minutes, aired in 120 countries around the world. Discussed “Change” via Obama’s agenda (already underway) vs. last administration: new $800 B stimulus for workers, consumers, and jobs vs. last one from Bush just for financial institutions & Wall Street (all the big Republican donors); no torture, close Guantanamo, focus on Afghanistan where bin Laden/Al Qaeda really are vs. Iraq war missing the target; stem cell research, children’s health, national health; tax cuts for middle and working classes who need to use the additional funds instead of the rich. Also discussed policies from reason instead of compulsion, and referenced how even Bush’s farewell address showed just simple “good versus evil” and 9-11/9-11/9-11 instead of a sophophisticated understanding of policies which America and the world understand Obama brings, a reason for his high poll ratings versus Bush’s tanked ones. Also suggested that while the change will be dramatic and will start now, media assertions of vast action immediately (showed AARP bulletin just out saying “Day 1”) are overstated, as much will take months and a few years. Show host: Adam Boulton. Co-guest: Jon-Christopher Bua, Sky News Washington correspondent.

  • 11/18/2008 -- 10:15 AM C-Span TV Q&A Live at Steny Hoyer News Conference at National Press Club- Was second questioner, I asked about how to restore respect for Congress from dismal 12-23% approval ratings, lower than Bush (i.e., our oped). Steny gave terrific answer that Actions and Accomplishment will define public respect, Obstructionism will be reduced with increased D numbers, House will pass bills (and in fact did so last time but the Senate blocked them by cloture), Senate will now reduce cloture abuses with 57-60 D number higher than current 51, and Obama will sign the bills. He said polls showed country felt moving in wrong direction. He concluded that Congress will act now to reverse that and a Democratic President and Congress will produce a product with the change that makes the country feel better and be better. | VIDEO (fast forward to 10:20 AM) | Transcript
  • 11/11/2008 -- Interviewed live on WASN (Youngstown and Cleveland OH through Pittsburgh PA), host Louie Free, "Brain food from the Heartland," also Internet and archived, re election, how D's won and R's lost, Congress and Administration agendas, and our pending Roll Call oped on "Restoring Respect for Congress" set to run this week. • 11/08/2008 -- 6:30 PM Interviewed on Radio America "Battle Line" re election, upcoming Administration, and Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. When challenged on Rahm's supposed partisanship, I was able to give personal White House experience with Rahm who worked with Democrats and Republicans in a White House successfully stewarding crime bill and welfare reform, not partisan issues, and creating a surplus and jobs. I also pointed to broad issues President Obama likely will want to deal with at the outset, including the economy/stimulus and the war.

  • 11/04/2008 -- 3:05 PM Interview live on Radio New Zealand
  • 10/25/2008 -- 12:40 PM Interviewed live on Sky News Television (120 countries) re status of election. Said we will run all the way through but looks good. I used and showed color visual of pollster.com’s projected 306 electoral votes to 157 with 75 undecided. I also said McCain will not win throwing out varied new personal attacks that he tries like “terrorist” one week, “Socialist” the next, and what’s next -- “space Martian”? I said the election WILL be decided on the issues and I used as visuals the last 3 days of Washington Post headlines -- “Bailout Expands as Distress Spreads” (Sat.), “Greenspan Says Was Wrong on (No) Regulation” (Fri.) -- the Republican policy, and “Job Losses Accelerate” (Thurs.). I said that as we face these crises plus ending the war, Barack Obama’s display of cool, calm, and collected is what the American people want, versus McCain’s acting mean spirited and not being able to find his way wandering around the stage.
  • 10/24/2008 - 5:37 PM Dr. Pat Berg interviewed LIVE on Channel 5 Fox TV, Washington DC, re prostate cancer gene
  • 10/24/2008 - 5:00 PM Dr. Pat Berg taped interview on Channel 9 CBS TV on her new discovery of prostate cancer gene, paralleling her earlier discovery of breast cancer gene
  • 10/11/2008 - 6:30 PM Interviewed on Radio America "Battle Line," host Alan Nathan, re economic crash and election. I opened by citing Treasury Sec Henry Paulson's quote a few months ago: "Our financial institutions are strong. Our banks are strong. They will be strong for many years." I also stated that while everyone is claiming the crash is due to Freddie and Fannie, I stated that foreclosures are only 1% of all homes and far greater damage was done by exorbitant oil prices which blocked people's ability to pay for their usual needs -- including housing, helping lead to the foreclosures. Not only auto and heating costs spiraled beyond belief but the transportation prices of all goods including or related to food, health, and college. While Bush-McCain ignored any discipline on oil companies despite Democrats' attempts in Congress, that stopped the ability of people to pay, drove credit up, and for some reason is an unstated cause of the mess. I also took issue with people challenging the premise of Freddie and Fannie, since home ownership for the poor and middle class is not a bad thing but a good thing, and both parties have properly supported it. The key is allowing the ability to pay the bills.
  • 10/04/2008 - 6:30 PM Interviewed on Radio America "Battle Line," host Alan Nathan, on against Republican speechwriter Michael Long, re Biden-Palin debate. I pointed out that according to CBS and CNN polls, Biden won overwhelmingly (46-21 among uncommitted according to CBS and 51-39 overall acc to CNN), BECAUSE the American people saw through the charade of Palin's tactics for the debate and agreed with Biden's statement of the fundamental differences between Obama-Biden and McCain-Palin on ending the Iraq War and changing the policies that brought the economic crisis. I also pointed out (and I read the Constitution this morning to confirm) that Palin's attempt to expand the power of the Vice Presidency even beyond the outrages of Cheney -- through her statement that "the Constitution allows" it -- is nowhere in the document and is quite scary. The places the VP powers are specified, Article I Section 3, and Article II Section 1, ONLY state that the VP "shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no vote, unless they be equally divided." I added that Palin's attempt to discard the past was beaten by Biden's effective and accurate linking Bush to McCain. Alan also asked if there could be a racial factor in the election. I mentioned the training I had as communications director for senior CBC members Rangel and Conyers before I went to the Clinton WH and said that there is a likelihood especially given that Gallup just polled that 6% could vote based on race; but Obama is ahead with that already factored in -- the pollsters are more scientific on that now than in the past.
  • 09/28/2008 - 5:30 AM (12:30 PM London time) Interviewed live on SKY NEWS TELEVISION (145 countries) re election and post-debate analysis. Pointed out that polls show Obama won debate by 13 points; House leaders Blount and Hoyer both stated McCain complicated and made more difficult the financial solutions deal; as DNC research pointed out McCain made at least 14 misstatements in the debate from his Lebanon claim (he wasn’t even in Congress when the troops went in that he says he voted to stop) to Eisenhower (in the letter he never offered to resign, only to accept responsibility if it failed) to Obama’s votes on troops (never voted against troops, only wanted Iraq timeline) to taxes (Obama does not raise taxes and lowers them on all making under 250K.) Also pointed out today’s NYX article showing McCain’s serious gambling problem – “has gambled for years” and throws out thousands until 2:30 AM, and is how he has compulsively handled his campaign and the issues, as gambling, from Palin to the financial crisis deal/debate no-show-show to Social Security privatization. When asked if we would win election, I said, I expect given the issues that we will gain 20-40 seats in the House, 4-8 in the Senate, and may even win the Presidential election in a landslide, given the 9-point recent lead which could go to 10-15 after McCain’s recent debacles.

  • 08/02/2008 - 6:00 PM Guest on Radio America “Battle Line," host Alan Nathan, first half hour (about 20 minutes, two segments). I opened by saying “Not live from the McCain Low Road Headquarters featuring Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.” Then we talked about Iraq/Afghanistan (I pointed out Obama has led the agenda) and racial politics (I said he is fully entitled to say the facts of what he looks like and only by claiming it is “the race card”, which McCain did, does it become “the race card” – more McCain low road)

  • 06/14/2008 - 6:30 PM Guest on Radio America "Battle Line" (700 cities and www.radioamerica.org and www.alannathan.com, when airs click "Listen Live," and on Nathan site starting Monday archived for a week), host Alan Nathan. Debated Gary Alldrich, conservative, re the Supreme Court's Guantanamo decision supporting habeas corpus and opposing holding prisoners for as much as 6 years without trials. Had fun asking Aldrich, a former FBI agent, how he explained his agency, the FBI, specifically opposing the CIA's torture techniques and making the case against it to the administration but being overruled. His answer was something like they do a different type of prisoner... which I said was nonsense, since of course the FBI also handles terrorism. I also brought out how Collin Powell made points that regular prisons could handle detainees under regular legal procedures and we have have 2 million plus in normal prisons including high profile prisoners and horrible violent people. I also reported (as Washington Post said today) that Supreme Court was not saying don't interrogate terrorists, but don't hold some 6 years without cause on flimsy evidence where it's a matter of not wanting to expose the weakness of your case in many cases. I quoted House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers' statement after the ruling, "The Court was rightly outraged that some of the parties in this case had been held for six years without being given the right to challenge." I also repeated President Bush's latest statement that while he will honor ruling, he is staying put on the issue and even proposed congressional legislation to override the Supreme Court (I doubt Congress would come close to letting it pass).

Debated conservative Chuck Nash.

  • 01/05/2008 - 6:00 PM Guest on Radio America “Battle Line,” host Alan Nathan. Discussed Iowa-NH-beyond; made point in various ways that the high Democratic vs. Republican turnout (2-1) shows that whoever win the Republican nomination, the Democratic nominee can turn red states like Iowa blue because people want change from Republicans’ policies continuing Iraq war based on false premises with bin Laden still at large, high oil and gas prices, housing collapse, culture of corruption like Liddy pardon, opposition to children’s health insurance, privatization of Social Security, tax breaks for rich as failed economic solution for everything (also 01/06/2008 - 3 AM)

  • 03/17/2007 - 6:00 PM Live guest on Radio America “Battle Line,” host Alan Nathan, re Iraq etc. Alan as well as the other guest, conservative Ben Johnson, editor of Front Page Magazine, asserted Post story of Sadr complying with troop surge was a major indicator of success. I countered that the insurgents always punt for a while when we go in strong and then come back (as they did when we went in the first time); this is too little too late (3,100 deaths, 25,000 injured including 10,000 loss of limbs and brains, $750 billion dollars); American people believe the questionable mission is no longer worth the price even if it would be nice to “succeed”; they are sick of Bush crying wolf on Iraq; the only reason there are any “terrorists” in Iraq (and only small number are really al Qaeda) is we created the war there; and we should be fighting terror where terror is, in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and also stop ignoring confronting the Afghanistan drug lords who fund and harbor the real alQaeda/binLaden HQ.

Bob pointed out the Administration's Social Security proposals are Cry-wolf, Granny-you're on-your own, Wall Street Giveaway; and the Medicare drug benefit blocks price negotiations and imports (proposals Dems tried to include) and benefits the pharmaceutical companies; and Administration is catering to Wall Street contributors of $38 million to Bush presidential campaigns rather than the nation's seniors and others needing and expecting assistance from both Social Security and Medicare | Transcript

Made points that all premises for Iraq war turned out false, prison scandal responsibility goes to top especially with becoming-public Rumsfeld "black operations" memo authorizing greater stress and humiliation interrogation techniques in Iraq, and in view of Bush's direction of "Bring-em-on" and we-can-do-what-we-want mentality which trickled right down to the prison guards

Opened with "Three years and Out" actually will be used for Bush, not just in his immigration proposal. Then discussed anti-drug trips to the border with McCaffrey/Brown/Conyers/Rangel, seeing the easy crossing access, asking why they don't light up all the accessible areas since law enforcement reports that illegal crossings stop where they do, and getting no good answer. Said Bush has put out a proposal (that doesn't include more lights) and Democrats responded that it was token election pandering knowing it's going nowhere, whereas he does nothing on education/health/jobs.

  • 04/19/2004 - WWOW, Cleveland, OH - Live guest on "Louie Free Show" for full hour 8-9AM. Subjects included Woodward book citing Bush advance Iraq war planning and funding without congressional appropriation in violation of Constitution, lack of WMD which was main reason for war and administration lies and failures, recent books Woodward-O'Neill-Clark, the American people catching on, and for humor with a point, described Nintendo's poster ad with chipmunk standing and holding battle axe with slogan, "A Planet With Fear Needs a Hero With None" and made obvious comparisons... Also discussed Kerry's viability and acting presidential as we had said needed in our recent Cleveland Plain Dealer op-ed, Starr's appointment as Pepperdine Law Dean a terrible model for students learning law (our recent Washington Times piece) and his actual miniscule constituency but its continuing wedge for the extreme right wing, Republic rich beneficiaries of Bush tax cuts versus real tax reform, and Bush's deficit in contrast to Clinton's surplus and Kerry's proposed actions.

  • 04/12/04: PENN AND TELLER TV Show on "War on Drugs," on Showtime. RW extensive interview aired. Was hillarious show but their position was freedom from federal interference. The way they used me as their foil, yelling "WEINER WEINER WEINER" and making fun of our position, was quite remarkable. They did use a lot of my interview throughout program but they surrounded it each time with legalizers. An experience -- Maher was nothing compared to it! But still worth it -- should not have a show without representing a rational position, and our team appreciates the reasoning even through the BS.
